Daemon X Machina: Free on the Epic Games Store

By: Mr Constantine

Once again, Epic is continuing its practice of giving away free games, and the brand new free title that has been made free this week, is Daemon X Machina! Daemon X Machina will be free from January 27th to February 3rd, it is a Mecha third-person shooter action game developed and published by Marvelous. If you dont know them, Marvelous Inc. is a Japanese video game developer, publisher, and anime producer. The company was formed in October 2011 by the merger of the original Marvelous Entertainment, AQ Interactive, and Liveware. They are known for video game titles such as “Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns” and the “Fate” video game series.

Aside from that, I'm pretty sure most of you guys came to this video with the questions, is this game worth getting, and is it worth my time? Well, to answer the first question which is whether or not the game is worth getting, the answer is definitely going to be a YES. Even if you don't plan on playing Daemon X Machina, it's still worth getting because this might be the only time where the game is going to be made free. However, whether or not the game is worth your time, is a different question. To answer the question, we have to first take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of the game.

Starting off with the first Strength of Daemon X Machina, it is its gameplay. According to players who have played the game for multiple hours, most of them have the same opinion, which is that Daemon X Machina’s gameplay is balanced and in the “fun zone”. What they mean by this is that the game isn't too easy or too hard. It's perfectly balanced. Normally in video games, difficulty can range from baby level, challenging and frustrating. And Daemon X Machina lands in the challenging area which is the ideal spot for how difficult games should be. Aside from difficulty, another thing that makes the gameplay great is that there is also a balance between short destructive missions and quiet moments. This allows players to not find the game repetitive very easily. In addition, the game also features a ton of customization, to the point where customizing your character can even take as long as a mission. You can customize stats, paint jobs and decals, which is pretty old-school.

Now, since the gameplay is great and balanced, is the narrative just as good? Well, when it comes to the story, it's actually quite intriguing, Daemon X Machina tells a story of the world recovering from a major catastrophe. The moon has crashed into the planet, and the resulting wreck has been emitting a strange energy that’s not only turning all artificial intelligence sentient, but also turning it hostile towards the human race. But the radiation has not just affected artificial intelligence, it has also heightened the abilities of a number of civilians, including your character. After getting a boost from the radiation, you decide to offer your services to help take down the ever-growing threat of AI robots through the method of fighting them in big mechs.

But despite the story being quite interesting and unique, it can sometimes get in the way which is the first weakness of the game. Some users would complain that despite the gameplay being awesome, the story would hinder the game’s potential of becoming great. The game has been often criticized for having way too much exposition that players would sometimes find meaningless and annoying. The story is also told in fragments of text and cutscenes which makes the characters feel one-dimensional. Now obviously some of you might say that in a mech-game, the story won't matter as much. And that is actually a valid point, but it still depends on personal preference. Some of you guys out there probably have more fun in a game that has an engaging story rather than a game that has awesome gameplay, and vice versa.

Now if that still isn't enough to help you decide whether or not you should play the game, let's dive into the design of the game. Now when it comes to design and art style, Daemon X Machina looks fantastic. The living manga designs, technicolor-skied maps, spectacular cartoon looking explosions, and endlessly elegant animations are stunning, and they're made all the more astounding considering the fact that the game was also supposed to be launched on the Nintendo Switch that has limited hardware. But this also depends on personal preference, as some of you may not like the look of the game, and some may love the design.

In conclusion, the answer to whether or not Daemon X Machina is worth getting on Epic Games, is definitely going to be a YES. But when it comes to whether or not you should play it...really depends on your personal preference. If you prefer a game that focuses more on gameplay rather than an engaging story, and you like the look of the manga art style, then you should definitely check the game out.
